Your Unique Superpowers

Who isn’t flattered to pick up a book, read a post, or watch an online video telling YOU how special you are? Why yes, flattery will get you everywhere.

I hope you have embraced the fact that you’re pretty special. Unfortunately, we know it’s a double-edged sword. It’s sporadic, has intense moments, and can bottom out quickly.

How about seeing if we can smooth out that curve a little, shall we?

Your superpower accessories

Give me a shout out if I ‘m missing something, but here are the superpower lineup that comes to me first:

  • hyper-focus
  • novel ideas
  • power brainstorms
  • creative creations

Nice, very nice. So what’s so wrong with this list? Well…

Hyper-focusing can turn a short project into something longer that it should be. Novel ideas don’t necessarily translate to action. Brainstorms can lead to overwhelm and rabbit holes. Creativity? Sometimes we just don’t know when to quit.

And yet, these skills have produced some amazing results. Another effect they have, boosting our morale when we feel down on all the other so-called shortfalls we have.

It is a vicious cycle.

Human solutions

First thought, get an accountibility partner. You’ve heard me say it before, but perspective is our friend. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come up with some harebrain idea and took action on it. Not little actions, but big actions.

I buy domain names like some women buy shoes. It’s embarrassing. The thing is I will make up the whole website (because I can that’s my superpower). Then I’ll either lose interest or wait around listening to the crickets. Bouncing ideas off of a real human might have prevented some of these rabbit holes.

There are some life coaches out there who specialize in working with ADD/ADHD clients. I have often thought of to explore that route. I did one time spend some time with a life coach (not ADD/ADHD specific. She was local, so I saw her in-person, but just as I predicted, it was difficult to end that relationship (as money was coming out of my cheap-wad pockets).

What’s the fun of having a superpower if it doesn’t serve you well? It’s the gift the world gave you, use it wisely.

Renee’s Rabbit Hole

If you’re going to take the leap, make sure it’s with someone who understands you. The budget version is confiding in a trusted friend. Professional services like ADHD Coaching and ADHD Certified Coach can you on your way. These are in no way endorsed, there are plenty of them out there. Just do your homework and read some reviews. Who knows? Maybe you have a friend who can make a personal recommendation (sorry it isn’t me!).

The good thing, is that this type of help is excepted in the mainstream, so there should be no reason to feel embarrassed.

These experienced people often have ADD/ADHD themselves. Wait – it’s a good thing. They will understand you like no one else can. And because they are creative thinkers, they may be able to offer new strategies to keep things under control.

Alternative solutions

You were waiting for me to say “gadgets”, weren’t you?

Things like timers are helpful, to create limits to the unlimited brain party. Forced breaks can disrupt a constant over-drilling of attempts (beating a dead horse is NEVER effective!). Go for a walk, take an extended vacation, really shake-up your routine. Especially before making big decisions.

Deadlines is a winner when it comes to not knowing when to stop. If someone doesn’t give a deadline to you, you might have to set some imaginary ones yourself.

Conclusion

There is hope. What’s the fun of having a superpower if it doesn’t serve you well? It’s the gift the world gave you, use it wisely.
