You know the feeling. You step into the shower, and suddenly, your brain is firing off the most brilliant ideas you’ve ever had. You’re solving world problems, crafting the perfect comeback to a conversation from three years ago, and inventing a new business—all before you’ve even rinsed the shampoo out of your hair.
Then, poof. The second you step out, it’s all gone.
Welcome to the ADHD shower thought phenomenon.

Why ADHD Brains Thrive in the Shower
There’s something magical about showers for ADHD minds. It’s a perfect storm of:
- Sensory stimulation – Warm water, steam, and the rhythmic sound of droplets create a calming, dopamine-friendly environment.
- Distraction-free thinking – No notifications, no to-do lists, just you and your thoughts.
- Movement and routine – The repetitive motions of washing and rinsing help the brain wander freely.
How to Capture Your Genius Ideas Before They Vanish
In my youtube video on shower thoughts, I talk about an experience that quadrupled my shower thoughts. This all centered around intentional time for thinking: I routinely invest this time in the morning in deep thought, centering myself thinking about future projects, ideas, and even meditation time.
I found that when I stepped into the shower afterwards, my thoughts – brand, new shiny ones – exploded. I wasn’t ready for it and grabbed a notebook while my dripping hand wrote pages of ideas as I continually stepped in and out of the shower. It was amazing.
If you are especially in need of solving a problem, or need that next blog post, then I suggest a session in the shower!
I also suggest getting a shower-proof notepad – and not the little wimpy kind! I’m not writing the grocery list, I’m coming up with life-changing ideas!
1. Waterproof Notebooks Exist—Use Them
Yes, they’re real. Get one. Stick it in your shower. Scribble down your thoughts before they escape into the abyss.
2. Voice Notes Are Your Best Friend
If writing in the shower feels like too much effort, keep your phone nearby and record voice memos the second you step out. Don’t miss out on my digital voice recorder review!
3. Set an Intention Before You Step In
Instead of waiting for random thoughts to hit, go in with a question or problem you want to solve. Your brain will do the rest.
4. Embrace the Chaos
Not every shower thought needs to be groundbreaking. Sometimes, the best ideas come when you let your brain wander without pressure.
The ADHD Shower Thought Superpower
ADHD brains are wired for creativity, problem-solving, and unconventional thinking. The shower is just one of the many places where brilliance strikes—so don’t let those ideas slip away.
Now, go take that shower and let your brain do its thing. Just don’t forget to write it down this time.
